Aircraft model
BOEING E75(N2S-5)
Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.
The Boeing Model E75 is a Stearman variant, built during the war as the PT-13D and N2S-5 primary trainer with a Lycoming R-680 radial rather than the Continental fitted to the more common PT-17. It is an open-cockpit biplane with two tandem seats and wire bracing, and thousands were built to teach military pilots to fly before being sold off cheaply and put to work as cropdusters.
Nobody buys one as transport. It cruises at 85 knots, it is loud, cold and windy, and there is no cabin. What it offers is an experience nothing else provides, plus aerobatics and a strong ride-giving business for those who want one. The burdens are substantial: a radial engine that throws oil, needs careful starting and is expensive to overhaul; a fabric-covered wood and steel structure needing periodic recovering and permanent hangarage; wire bracing that must be checked and tensioned; and a narrow-tracked taildragger with a well-earned ground-loop reputation. Both a tailwheel and a high-performance endorsement are required, and insurers want real time in type.
