AIR TRACTOR INC AT-402
Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.
The AT-402 is the smaller of Air Tractor's 400-series ag aeroplanes: a 400-gallon fibreglass hopper, a single seat over it, and a PT6A-11AG flat-rated at 550 shp. The B-model that replaced it has the 680 shp PT6A-15AG, so the 402 is the same airframe with a hundred and thirty fewer horsepower — which on a hot morning with a full hopper out of a short strip is most of the difference between the two.
Ag aeroplanes are bought as tools and inspected as such. Chemical corrosion, the condition of the hopper and its plumbing, the spray or spreader system, and the wing spar and attach fittings after thousands of hours of low-level turning are the whole of the survey. Air Tractor is still in business and supports the fleet, which puts the 400 series in a much better position than most agricultural types. The PT6 is the running cost and an engine programme is worth having.

- Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories.
