Aircraft model

ALON A2

Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.

The Alon A2 Aircoupe is the Ercoupe as revived in the mid-1960s by Alon Inc, with a sliding bubble canopy in place of the old sliding side windows, conventional rudder pedals as standard, a 90 hp engine and a more modern interior. It is the most developed version of the design before Mooney bought it and fitted a swept tail.

The rudder pedals are the significant change: an A2 is flown like a normal aeroplane and can be slipped, which the original 415-C cannot, so transitioning in or out is straightforward. It is quicker and better equipped than an Ercoupe and still cheap. At 1,450 lb gross it exceeds the light sport limit, so a sport pilot certificate is not sufficient. The fleet is small — roughly 250 were built — so some parts are specialist items, though much is shared with the Ercoupe.

  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories.
