Aircraft model
AMERICAN AA-1
Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.
The AA-1 Yankee is the original of the small Grumman American two-seaters: a sliding-canopy, bonded-aluminium sports aeroplane with a very short wing, designed by Jim Bede and sold as something more exciting than a Cessna 150. At 118 knots on 108 hp it is genuinely quick for its power.
The short wing is the problem and it is a serious one. The Yankee has a high wing loading, an abrupt stall and poor spin characteristics; it is placarded against intentional spins and the type accumulated a stall and spin accident record that led directly to the modified wing on the AA-1A that replaced it after two model years. It is not a forgiving first aeroplane and should not be treated as a trainer. The free-castering nosewheel steers by differential braking, and bonded joint delamination and corrosion are the specific inspection items.

These record scores treat AMERICAN AA-1 as one design with the same aircraft registered under other names: it includes the record of aircraft once registered under GRUMMAN AMERICAN AVN. CORP.. Prices are not combined.
- Accident record: class median 29.1 · 174 models in class.
- Severity: class median 9.09.
- Access: class median 974.

- Liquidity: class median 20.47.
- Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories.
