AVIAT AIRCRAFT INC A-1C-180

Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.

The A-1C-180 is the current-generation Husky with a 2,200 lb gross weight, a strengthened structure and a useful load of about 840 lb, which is a genuine improvement over the earlier A-1B and makes a real difference when carrying camping gear or operating on floats. It has 180 hp, climbs at 1,500 fpm and will fly 800 nautical miles.

This is the aeroplane to buy if the budget stretches to it, because the extra gross weight solves the one real complaint about earlier Huskies. It is expensive — a good used one costs as much as a new four-seat aircraft from some manufacturers — and that price reflects scarcity and a strong backcountry market rather than any bargain. Aviat is a small company, so parts support is attentive but not on the scale of a Textron. As a taildragger with a big wing it demands currency and wind awareness, and insurers want meaningful tailwheel time. Tundra tyres, floats and skis are common fits that change both capability and price.
