Aircraft model

BEECH E33

Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.

The E33 is the 1968-69 straight-tail Bonanza, the year Beech dropped the Debonair name and started calling the 33-series aircraft Bonanzas outright. It has 225 hp, a properly equipped interior and the same airframe as the V-tail without the tail.

It is a fast, well-made four-seat retractable that avoids the V-tail's structural history entirely, which is the main reason to prefer a 33-series aeroplane. The costs are Bonanza costs: an IO-470 overhaul, retractable gear maintenance, Beech parts prices and around 14 gallons an hour. Check the wing spar carry-through and the condition of the magnesium control surfaces, which corrode on the 33 series as well as on the V-tails. A transition course is expected by insurers.

  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories.
