Aircraft model

BELLANCA 14-19

Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.

The Bellanca 14-19 Cruisemaster: the 1949 four-seat retractable with a 190 hp Franklin, a wooden wing, a fabric-covered steel tube fuselage and the triple tail that makes a Bellanca recognisable from a mile away. It cruises at about 157 knots on 190 horsepower, which is a figure most modern four-seaters cannot match on 230, and it does it because the airframe is unusually clean.

A wooden-wing Bellanca is bought for the speed and owned with the wing in mind. The spar and glue joints are the whole of the pre-purchase inspection and there is an inspection history worth reading up on before committing. The Franklin engine is a specialist item with a thin parts supply. Against that, the aeroplane is a genuine 155-knot four-seater that can be bought for the price of a tired trainer, and the type community is knowledgeable and generous.

  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories.
