BELLANCA 14-19-3

Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.

The Bellanca 14-19-3 is the 260 hp Cruisemaster with tricycle gear, the model that became the Viking line. It cruises at 165 knots and carries 1,100 lb, and the wooden wing that gives every Bellanca its efficiency is doing the same job here.

It is fast for the money and an unusual aeroplane to own. The wooden wing is the thing that decides value: spruce and plywood covered in fabric, strong and light but ruined by water, so hangarage is mandatory and inspection needs someone who understands wooden structures — a shrinking skill. The Continental IO-470 is a considerable improvement on the Franklins of the earlier Bellancas and is well supported. Parts for the airframe come through specialists and the type club rather than a manufacturer.

  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories.
