The SportCruiser is a Czech all-metal light sport two-seater with a Rotax 912, a bubble canopy and a wide cabin. It had one brush with a big name: on 21 January 2010 Piper announced it would sell a licensed version as the PiperSport, built by Czech Sport Aircraft and distributed through Piper dealers. The arrangement lasted a year and 45 aircraft before Piper ended it in January 2011, so a 2010 aircraft may carry Piper badges and a PiperSport data plate while being, in every part, a SportCruiser. The Rotax 912 and the airframe have not changed in a way that is tied to a year.
It is one of the better-built LSAs, with a metal airframe that avoids the composite repair problem and a cabin roomier than most. Performance is ordinary for the class at 110 knots. The Rotax needs a trained mechanic and has calendar-based as well as hours-based maintenance. The manufacturer has been through name and ownership changes, so establish where parts come from before buying. As with every LSA, the 1,320 lb gross weight caps useful load at around 570 lb, which is two adults and reduced fuel.
