Wag-Aero Sport Trainer (CUBy)
1 model built 1975 · 94 on the US register today
The Wag-Aero Sport Trainer, sold from 1975 as the CUBy: Dick Wagner's plans-and-kit replica of the Piper J-3 Cub from the Cub parts supplier of Lyons, Wisconsin, designed after attempts to buy the rights to the Cub failed. A tandem two-seat steel-tube-and-fabric taildragger with a 35 ft 3 in wing, it differs from the original in its 4130 steel fuselage, elevator trim tab and optional aluminium ribs and spars, and takes anything from a 65 hp Continental to a 180 hp Lycoming. The prototype first flew on skis on 12 March 1975 and Paul Poberezny built the first customer example.
