HONDA AIRCRAFT CO LLC HA-420

Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.

The HondaJet is the most unusual aeroplane in this group: its engines are mounted on pylons above the wings rather than on the rear fuselage, which Honda spent two decades proving reduces drag at cruise and frees the whole rear of the aircraft for cabin and baggage. The result is a very light jet that cruises at 422 knots — faster than a Citation Mustang by a wide margin — on two small GE Honda turbofans, with a proper enclosed lavatory that nothing else this size offers. All of them carry the HA-420 designation and the differences are in weight and range. The original aircraft, certified in December 2015, has a 10,600 lb gross weight. The Elite, delivered from August 2018, added an auxiliary tank for about 200 miles more range, a 10,900 lb gross weight, a quieter engine inlet and performance and angle-of-attack protection features on the G3000. The Elite S of 2021 raised gross weight by another 200 lb, and the Elite II, certified in November 2022, added more fuel for 1,547 miles of range and autothrottles from 2023. A 2017 aircraft and a 2023 aircraft are the same airframe with roughly 500 lb and 300 miles between them.

It is single-pilot certified and aimed at owner-pilots, and it does the job well for short and medium legs. The limits are range and payload: 1,223 nautical miles is a book figure, and with four passengers and reserves the realistic leg is closer to 900 miles. Honda is a new entrant in aviation and its service network, while expanding and well regarded, is far smaller than Textron's — that is the main practical risk in ownership and is worth checking against where the aircraft will be based. Residual values have held up better than early sceptics expected.

These record scores treat HONDA AIRCRAFT CO LLC HA-420 as one design with the same aircraft registered under other names: it includes 5 aircraft registered under HONDA AIRCRAFT COMPANY LLC; includes the record of aircraft once registered under HONDA AIRCRAFT CO INC. Prices are not combined.

  1. Accident record: class median 1.23 · 42 models in class.
  2. Severity: class median 10.
  3. Access: class median 9,850.

  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories.
