Aircraft model

MAULE MXT-7-180

Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.

The MXT-7-180 is the short-wing tricycle-gear Maule with 180 hp: the MX designation marks the shorter span and the T the nosewheel. It is the most accessible member of the family, needing neither a tailwheel nor a high-performance endorsement.

That accessibility is the point. It gives a pilot with no tailwheel experience a four-seat aeroplane with better short-field performance than a Cessna 172 and a useful load over 1,000 lb. The compromises follow: the shorter wing and the nosewheel both cost short-field capability, and 180 hp works hard with four aboard. Build quality is functional rather than refined and the cabin is narrow for four adults. Fabric is the recurring cost, and Maule remains in business to support the type.

The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories.
