MOONEY AIRPLANE CO INC M20TN

Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.

The Mooney Acclaim is the fastest certified production piston single ever built: 237 knots at 25,000 feet from a twin-turbocharged 280 hp Continental in the long-body Mooney airframe. Nothing else with a piston engine and a certificate goes faster, and it does it on about 18 gallons an hour. The designation covers two versions. The Acclaim was certified in December 2006; the Acclaim Type S, announced in September 2007, is the same aeroplane with a speed package — reshaped wingtips, a streamlined cowl with bigger cooling intakes, a new Hartzell propeller, gap and hinge seals — that added a few knots and is what every late-2007 and later aircraft is. Of the 143 M20TNs built the first 89 are plain Acclaims. The Acclaim Ultra of 2017, with doors on both sides, a composite forward fuselage and the G1000 NXi, is a separate designation, the M20V, and is not in this string.

The speed is the whole proposition and the compromises are the Mooney family's, amplified. The cabin is narrow and low and you sit with your legs forward. Useful load is under 1,000 lb, so with full fuel it carries two people and bags — this is a two-person aeroplane that goes a very long way very quickly. Oxygen is required for everyone at the altitudes where it performs. Mooney's corporate position has been unstable and production has stopped, so parts support leans on specialists and an active owner community.

  3. Access: class median 775.
  4. Support: class median 147.5.
  5. Liquidity: class median 19.9.
  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories.
