Aircraft model

NORTH AMERICAN AT-6D

Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.

The AT-6D is the Army Air Forces designation for a wartime production block of the Texan, the advanced trainer that taught almost every Allied fighter pilot to handle a high-powered retractable-gear aeroplane. Six hundred horsepower, a constant-speed propeller, retractable gear and a tailwheel, in an airframe deliberately made demanding.

It is a warbird and must be budgeted as one. The R-1340 radial is well supported by warbird standards but an overhaul is a six-figure event, fuel burn is around 35 gallons an hour, and the airframe requires inspections a light aircraft does not. It is genuinely difficult to fly well — the landing is famously unforgiving and the accident record reflects that — and insurance requires substantial tailwheel time plus formal type-specific training.

These record scores treat NORTH AMERICAN AT-6D as one design with the same aircraft registered under other names: it includes the record of aircraft once registered under NORTH AMERICAN/REYNOLDS. Prices are not combined.

  1. Accident record: class median 29.1 · 174 models in class.
  2. Severity: class median 9.09.
  3. Access: class median 974.
  4. Support: class median 81.
  5. Liquidity: class median 20.47.
  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories.
