Aircraft model
NORTH AMERICAN NAVION F
Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.
The Navion F is a Tusco conversion: the company re-engined a number of Navions and fitted them with wing-tip fuel tanks, and the results were designated Navion D, E and F with 260 hp engines. They are not factory models -- the letter records what was done to a 1940s airframe in the 1950s and 1960s, which is the central fact about buying one.
Ownership is complicated by the type's history. North American, Ryan, Tusco, Navion Aircraft and others built or modified them, engines from 185 to 285 hp have been fitted under various approvals, and two aircraft with the same registry designation can be materially different. The parts supply is a specialist trade and the American Navion Society is where the knowledge is. The airframe itself is famously over-built and the corrosion picture is usually good.

- Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories.
