PIPER PA-14

Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.

The Family Cruiser is a four-seat development of the PA-12 Super Cruiser, with a widened cabin, four seats and 115 hp. Piper built it for two years as a genuine family aeroplane at a time when most of its range carried two people. It is rare — roughly 240 were made — and sought after by people who want a four-seat fabric taildragger.

Four seats is optimistic with 115 hp: two adults and two children, or two adults and fuel and camping gear, is the realistic load, and climb on a warm day with four aboard is poor. What it offers is a big cabin, 38 gallons of fuel for long endurance, and Super Cub-like short-field ability. Most surviving aircraft have engine upgrades to 150 or 160 hp, which transform it and are worth seeking. Fabric age is the dominant cost question.

These record scores treat PIPER PA-14 as one design with the same aircraft registered under other names: it includes the record of aircraft once registered under LUCKEY MICHAEL L. Prices are not combined.

  1. Accident record: class median 32.28 · 202 models in class.
  2. Severity: class median 12.5.
  3. Access: class median 775.
  4. Support: class median 147.5.
  5. Liquidity: class median 19.9.
  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories.
