Aircraft model

PIPER PA-28R-201T

Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.

The Turbo Arrow III, a tapered-wing Arrow with a turbocharged 200 hp Continental in place of the normally aspirated Lycoming. In the high teens it cruises at about 172 knots, which is thirty-five knots better than the standard Arrow and puts it into Mooney territory, with a 20,000-foot ceiling for crossing weather and terrain.

The engine is the reason these sell at a discount to what the performance suggests. The Continental TSIO-360 in this installation has a long-standing reputation for running hot, for cylinder cracking and for turbocharger and exhaust problems, and it frequently does not reach its nominal overhaul life. Careful power and cooling management is not optional. There are also intercooler and cooling modifications available that materially improve matters — find out what a candidate has. Add the retractable gear maintenance and a complex endorsement requirement. Flying at 18,000 feet also means oxygen for everyone aboard. Bought with the engine history understood it is fast for the money; bought on the speed figure alone it disappoints.

  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories.
