QUEST AIRCRAFT COMPANY LLC KODIAK 100
Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.
The Kodiak 100 is a single-engine turboprop utility aircraft designed specifically for humanitarian and missionary aviation: fixed gear, a big cargo door, a discontinuous leading edge that gives it very benign stall behaviour, and the ability to get off in under 1,300 feet fully loaded. Quest was founded partly to build an aeroplane for mission operators, and Daher bought the company in 2019. The PT6A-34 and the airframe are unchanged since certification in 2007, so the year buys you a panel and a few systems. The Series II of May 2018 brought the Garmin G1000 NXi with Flight Stream 510, an angle-of-attack indicator, a digital standby instrument, better soundproofing and ventilation, and a redesigned cargo-door step. The Series III of March 2021 added the GFC 700 autopilot with envelope protection and level mode, GWX 75 weather radar, SurfaceWatch and synthetic vision, raised the landing weight to the 7,255 lb take-off weight so no fuel need be burned off before landing, lowered the zero-fuel weight for more payload, offered 29-inch tyres for rough strips and club seating for eight. An original 2008 to 2017 aircraft has the first-generation G1000 and the older autopilot.
It competes with the Cessna Caravan and beats it on short-field performance while carrying a similar load, though it is slower and the cabin is smaller. It runs on Jet-A, which matters in places where avgas does not exist. Amphibious float versions are common. Costs are turbine costs — hot sections, an eventual six-figure overhaul, around 47 gallons an hour — but a PT6 starts every time, which is the point in remote operations. Quest was acquired by Daher in 2019, which stabilised support.
