Sonex Aircraft Onex

These figures describe a typical build. Each aircraft of this design was built by its owner, and the one you are looking at may differ.

The Onex is Sonex Aircraft's single-seat folding-wing sport plane, flown in 2011 and sold as a kit: 600 lb empty, 950 lb gross, +6/-3 g, on an 80 hp AeroVee, with Sonex quoting 155 mph true at 8,000 ft, a 45 mph stall, 700-900 fpm and 535 miles.

The Onex is for one person who wants aerobatic capability, 130-knot cruise and a hangar bill the size of a car's - the wings fold in minutes and it fits a standard garage - and the trade is a 27-inch cockpit, 350 lb of useful load and a Volkswagen-derived engine. Builders fit anything from the stock AeroVee to a turbo AeroVee, a Jabiru or a Rotax 912, so empty weight and performance differ and the aircraft's own figures govern; as a single-seat homebuilt it has no training path, so a buyer needs the tailwheel and light-aircraft skills before the first flight. Pulled-rivet aluminium is straightforward to inspect. The owner may maintain it and the condition inspection needs an A&P or the repairman certificate; kits are in production.

  1. Accident record: class median 36.69 · 319 models in class.
  2. Severity: class median 13.33.
  3. Access: class median 1,000.
  4. Support: class median 79.
  5. Liquidity: class median 19.91.
  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories. When accident record and severity cannot be scored because the model has too few records, the other three give a partial score out of 30, labelled as such; it is never set against a full score.
