Avid Magnum

These figures describe a typical build. Each aircraft of this design was built by its owner, and the one you are looking at may differ.

The Avid Magnum is Avid Aircraft's enlarged, Lycoming-powered development of the Avid Flyer from the early 1990s: a steel-tube-and-fabric two-seater with a 33 ft folding wing built for the 160 hp O-320, 1,025 lb empty and 1,750 lb gross, with Jane's figures of 110 knots cruise, a 31-knot stall and 1,500 fpm.

The Magnum is the Avid for someone who wanted a certified aircraft engine and a real useful load, and it is correspondingly heavier and more expensive to feed than a Rotax Avid; with 725 lb to carry it is a two-adults-and-camping-gear bush plane rather than a toy. Avid Aircraft failed in the late 1990s and the Magnum's later custodians were small, so parts and support are the owner community's, and a kit-built fabric aeroplane of this age is judged on its welding, covering, gear fittings and builder's log rather than on type figures; no range or fuel figure was found here. The owner may maintain it and the condition inspection needs an A&P or the repairman certificate.

  1. Accident record: class median 36.69 · 319 models in class.
  2. Severity: class median 13.33.
  3. Access: class median 1,000.
  4. Support: class median 79.
  5. Liquidity: class median 19.91.
  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories. When accident record and severity cannot be scored because the model has too few records, the other three give a partial score out of 30, labelled as such; it is never set against a full score.
