Sling 2

These figures describe a typical build. Each aircraft of this design was built by its owner, and the one you are looking at may differ.

The Sling 2 is the South African all-metal two-seat low-wing from which Sling Aircraft's whole line descends, first flown in 2008: a 30 ft wing, a Rotax 912iS, 39.6 gallons and 816 lb empty, built from the kit at up to 700 kg (1,543 lb) or as an E-LSA at 1,320 lb, with the factory quoting 117 knots at 9,500 ft on 3.7 gallons an hour, 875 fpm and 830 nm. The factory-built Sling LSA is the same aeroplane as an S-LSA.

A kit Sling 2 is the version to want for useful load, because the 1,543 lb amateur-built gross gives it 727 lb against the S-LSA's roughly 500, and the airframe is identical; the price is amateur-built status, so the builder's work (much of it done at Sling's US build centres) and the aircraft's own weight-and-balance are the record. It is a modern pulled-rivet metal kit with matched holes, so airframes are consistent and inspection is easy, the 912iS wants its five-year rubber and gearbox checks, and the tanks' 40 gallons give it range most two-seaters lack. The owner may maintain it and the condition inspection needs an A&P or the repairman certificate; Sling's US presence in Torrance supports the type well.

  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories. When accident record and severity cannot be scored because the model has too few records, the other three give a partial score out of 30, labelled as such; it is never set against a full score.
