Bearhawk Five

These figures describe a typical build. Each aircraft of this design was built by its owner, and the one you are looking at may differ.

The Bearhawk Five is the six-seat stretch of the Bearhawk 4-Place, first flown in May 2020: a 34 ft wing with a Riblett aerofoil, 3,000 lb gross, a 315 hp Lycoming IO-580 with a three-blade Trailblazer, and projected figures of 160 mph cruise, a 40 mph stall and about 1,400-1,500 lb of useful load.

This is a new and still rare design, and most of the 25 registered are recent builds or kits in progress, so the figures are the designer's projections rather than fleet experience and the buyer is largely relying on the individual builder's work and test-flight data. It is a big, heavy tailwheel aeroplane with a six-cylinder engine: high-performance for endorsement purposes, expensive to insure for a low-time pilot, and with an engine overhaul bill in the same class as a Cessna 206's. In exchange it offers a six-seat bush aeroplane with a homebuilt's maintenance rules - the owner can do the work and the condition inspection needs an A&P or the repairman certificate. Kits are in production and factory support is current.

  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories. When accident record and severity cannot be scored because the model has too few records, the other three give a partial score out of 30, labelled as such; it is never set against a full score.
