Murphy Aircraft Moose

These figures describe a typical build. Each aircraft of this design was built by its owner, and the one you are looking at may differ.

The Murphy Moose is Murphy Aircraft's six-seat all-metal bush kit, the SR3500 development of the Super Rebel: a 36 ft wing, 1,799 lb empty and 3,499 lb gross, designed around the 355 hp Vedeneyev M14P radial though many carry a Lycoming IO-540, with Jane's figures of 134 knots at 70%, a 44-knot stall, 1,500 fpm and 521 nm; 120 had been built by 2011.

The Moose is a homebuilt Beaver substitute - six seats, 1,700 lb of useful load, floats, a radial - and it costs like one to run: the M14P wants oil, 100LL by the drum, a pilot who understands a Russian radial's start and hydraulic-lock drill, and a parts chain outside the US mainstream, while an IO-540 example trades the radial's charm for conventional maintenance. It is a big, heavy tailwheel aeroplane that is high-performance for endorsement purposes and expensive to insure, and a kit aeroplane whose pulled-rivet metal work, float fittings and engine installation are the builder's, so the builder's log and the weight-and-balance are the record. The owner may maintain it and the condition inspection needs an A&P or the repairman certificate; Murphy remains in business for parts.

  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories. When accident record and severity cannot be scored because the model has too few records, the other three give a partial score out of 30, labelled as such; it is never set against a full score.
