Kitfox Series 5

These figures describe a typical build. Each aircraft of this design was built by its owner, and the one you are looking at may differ.

The Kitfox Series 5 is SkyStar's 1994 enlargement of the Kitfox for certified engines - Continental and Lycoming as well as the Rotax 912 - with a 1,400 lb gross weight raised to 1,550 lb in 1995, sold as the tailwheel Safari (later Outback) and the swept-tail tricycle Vixen (later Voyager).

The Series 5 is the Kitfox for a buyer who wants a conventional aircraft engine and the useful load that 1,550 lb gross gives, and it is the generation where Kitfox weights and complexity grew; with a Continental or Lycoming the empty weight is several hundred pounds above a 912 example. Beyond the gross weight and engine options nothing could be sourced here, so the aircraft's weight-and-balance, build log and engine records are the basis of a purchase, and the gear configuration - Safari/Outback tailwheel or Vixen/Voyager tricycle - is part of the identity to confirm. It remains a folding-wing fabric aeroplane with Kitfox short-field manners and a modest cruise. The owner may maintain it and the condition inspection needs an A&P or the repairman certificate; Kitfox Aircraft supports the line.

  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories. When accident record and severity cannot be scored because the model has too few records, the other three give a partial score out of 30, labelled as such; it is never set against a full score.
