Aircraft model

SOCATA TBM-700 C2

Everything here is true of every aircraft of the type, not of any one aircraft.

A TBM is a single-engine turboprop that does most of what a light jet does on about half the fuel, and it changed what one PT6 and one pilot could reasonably be expected to cover. Pressurized, 30,000 ft, and quick enough that the difference against a small jet is measured in minutes rather than hours on the legs people actually fly.

Single-engine turbine ownership is a particular commitment. There is one engine, and it has to be maintained to a standard that makes that acceptable — an engine programme is effectively mandatory and its status is the first thing to establish about any aircraft. Daher supports the fleet well and the type has a strong safety record in trained hands, but the training is the point: insurers require type-specific initial and recurrent courses and a meaningful number of hours before they will write a policy at a sensible price.

  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories.
