Velocity SE / 173 / Standard (RG and FG)

These figures describe a typical build. Each aircraft of this design was built by its owner, and the one you are looking at may differ.

The Velocity is Danny Maher's 1985 four-seat canard pusher, a composite aeroplane with a 29 ft 4 in main wing, a 164-inch canard and gull-wing doors, offered with fixed or retractable gear and 160-215 hp Lycomings; the factory quotes 187 knots at 200 hp, 1,200 fpm, a 60 knot stall and 60 gallons (the maker publishes no 75 %-power range figure with a 30-minute reserve), with 1,000 lb useful on 2,300 lb.

A canard flies differently and lands differently - no stall in the conventional sense, a nose-high flat approach at 70 knots or more, long runways by light-aircraft standards and a pusher propeller that eats whatever the nosewheel throws at it - and the factory does its transition training in this model for a reason. Each example is a builder's: the gear, engine, propeller and the quality of the layup are the owner's, the fixed-gear version gives up 5-7 knots, and the aircraft's own weight-and-balance governs a design whose centre-of-gravity range is narrow. Velocity remains in business with service and training. No current asking prices were found in the marketplaces read, so the price cells are blank.

  6. Each of the five categories places the model within its peer class, from 0 (the worst of the class) to 10 (the best): a position among comparable models, not a grade. The overall score is the sum of the categories shown that are scored, out of 10 for each (50 when all five are); it is given only when at least 4 of the five are scored, and it can be set against another model's only when both are in the same peer class and scored on the same categories. When accident record and severity cannot be scored because the model has too few records, the other three give a partial score out of 30, labelled as such; it is never set against a full score.
